Flowing Factory

FLOWING FACTORY

Architecture Design | Work Project | Spring 2024

This project situated in the dynamic city of Tainan, Taiwan, this innovative mixed-use development seamlessly integrates a factory, research center, and office space. Given Tainan’s subtropical climate, with its intense summer heat, my design prioritizes thermal comfort and energy efficiency without compromising on aesthetics or functionality.

Drawing inspiration from the proximity to Tainan’s high-speed railway station, the design concept embraces the notion of ‘flow’. This is manifested in the building’s facade through undulating lines that evoke a sense of movement, mirroring the energy and rhythm of the adjacent transit hub. These flowing contours serve a dual purpose – they are not only visually captivating but also functional, forming shaded balconies and dynamic wall features that break up the building’s mass.

Moreover, the flowing forms on the facade provide passive solar shading, reducing the building’s energy consumption during the day. The landscaping around the building incorporates native flora that requires minimal irrigation, contributing to the site’s ecological balance and providing a green respite in an urban setting.

Sustainable Design

To combat the area’s soaring temperatures, the facade is clad in a high-reflectivity white material, selected for its superior ability to reflect solar radiation and minimize heat gain. This choice significantly reduces the building’s cooling load, contributing to a substantial decrease in energy consumption.

Passive design techniques are employed to enhance indoor comfort. The flowing lines on the facade are strategically oriented to optimize shading, where they cast shadows on the glazing during peak sun hours, while still allowing natural light to permeate the workspace. The balcony areas act as transitional spaces, offering outdoor enjoyment while buffering the interior from direct sun exposure.

Flowing on the Surface

Rooted in the philosophy of fluidity, the architectural form mirrors the perpetual motion associated with the adjacent transit hub. The design draws from the concept of ‘flow’, a thematic representation of movement and progress. The building’s silhouette is sculpted with undulating lines that cascade across the façade, integrating balconies and walls into a coherent dance of curvature and light. These flowing lines not only serve an aesthetic purpose but also facilitate social interaction and connectivity, fostering a sense of community among the users.

Recognizing the value of green spaces in urban settings, the Tainan Nexus is interspersed with lush landscaping. These verdant spaces not only contribute to the local ecosystem but also provide serene environments for visitors.
